Theresa W Chavez –
This was my first time working with ultem and it is a really cool handle material. When sanded to 1500 grit and polished with tripoli and plastic polish it looks like amber or very fine honey. Can’t hide any crimes with this stuff but for something so smooth it feels great in the hand and has a nice grippy-ness to it.
Tammy Bailey –
Ultem’s strength lies in the fact that it maintains the majority of its strength under high heat. Whereas most plastics will start to soften or melt at 200-300 F, Ultem can keep on going. It’s more flexible than G-10 but not as strong for impacts.
Austin D Felix –
I am trying to powder coat steel part with ULTEM 1000F3SP PEI powder. Electrostatic spraying worked well, but heat treatment not so well. ULTEM melting temperature is 350 – 400 °C (680 – 750 F). Applied 360 °C for the duration of approximately 4-5 minutes. The coat was very thin and stuck well but had (what appears to be) uneven heating patterns.
Debra J Strauss –
it’s very high melting point. It’s glass transition temperature is like 215 degrees celsius, far above most other plastics.
Daryl A Saxton –
What’s funny is compared to a lot of other plastics, ultem is fairly brittle and sucks to machine because it likes to chip out on unsupported edges unless you’ve got ultra sharp cutters and have your feeds, speeds, and tool paths just right.
Fred A Miles –
Ultem is a love it or hate it material..machines well and has alot of good quality uses..been around awhile..I personally like it..I make stuff with it..so guess I’m partial..
Theresa W Chavez –
Compared to PEEK, it’s more affordable but slightly less robust under extreme conditions. Still, for most of our applications, it’s the perfect balance of cost and performance.
Gerry Fredericksen –
Just got my hands on some Ultem 1000 pellets, and man, these things are tough! I’ve been using them for some custom parts in my workshop, and they’ve held up way better than the ABS I used before.
Barbara D Smith –
Better thermal resistance than PEEK in our testing, though it’s slightly less flexible. If budget allows, it’s an ideal choice for critical-use cases.
Donna J Collins –
Ultem 1000 are like the golden standard for me. I’ve tried other high-heat plastics, but nothing quite matches the balance of rigidity and heat resistance here.
Timmy Rodriguez –
I love it and hate it. Love how bombproof the finished parts are but hate how tricky it is to work with. My machine kept clogging until I figured out the perfect nozzle temp.
